Hi Ecigssa members, In this review i take a look at the Tyro Starter Kit from Vaptio. The Tyro Starter Kit was supplied for the purpose of this review by Bear from Vaptio.

Introduction

Vaptio are known equally well for their Heroes high powered devices and quality genuine Starter Kits and here we have their latest offering of the latter. Making use of the Cosmo coils that came with the Cosmo tank the Tyro is a AIO low powered vape pen offering both MTL and DL options with the bonus of also being compatible with Nautilus coils. The Tyro has a side filling method and turn the whole tank section to alter airflow. There have been a few starter kits of late of this nature allowing both MTL and DL vaping with the same device so lets have a little look at this nifty little AIO set-up!

Aesthetics and Ergonomics

The Tyro comes in simple cardboard packaging with viewing window so i could see i had received the Red version before opening the packaging. The tyro is also available in Black, Stainless Steel, Blue, Purple and Rainbow, the finish on all versions is metallic in nature. Apart from the Stainless Steel and Rainbow the other colours start Silver at the bottom and blend into the colour of choice but are dominated by the chosen colour. The pen is quite slim with a diameter of 19mm and can easily be slipped into the pocket and like all devices of this type is ergonomically friendly. The front of the battery has a square Black fire button towards the top with an indented "V", towards the bottom we have "TYRO" printed. On the reverse towards the top we have the micro USB port then to one side is a long but narrow airflow slot. The base has etched branding and safety marks as well as a central venting hole. The tank section see's o-rings top and bottom of the glass section and the top tapers outwards, sitting on top is a standard delrin 510 drip tip. At the top of the battery section is a Silver ring which breaks up the colour nicely but also has an important function which will be explained further on in the review.

The Tank Section

The top of the battery is also the base of the tank which includes the airflow system, simply screw your coil straight into the top section of the battery the same way you would screw a coil into the base of a tank. You get supplied with 2 coils, the Kanthal Cosmo C1 MTL coil 1.6ohm which is rated between 10-15w, the the other included coil is the kanthal DL coil the Cosmo C2 which is 0.7ohm with a rating between 15-23w. At the very top of the battery we have an O-ring which seals the glass in place very securely, although the top of the coil screwing to the air pipe holds the tank securely together it is very secure even when a coil isn't fitted. When you pull the top section with glass off the battery or unscrew when a coil is fitted you are now free to remove the glass from the upper o-ring, you get a spare glass. The Tyro has a standard fitting 510 drip tip that sits on top of what looks like a top-cap but this doesn't unscrew or slide open but does house the filling method.

Filling

The Tyro has a side fill method which is achieved by the top of the tank being doubled walled. On the top we can see a square with the "V" for vaptio, this "V" is actually on the inner wall and is being viewed through a generous sized square cutout on the outer wall. On the opposite side to the "V" on the inner wall we also have an identical cutout so you turn the top until they line up then fill, once filled turn the top again until the "V" is visible. The port is a good size but because your filling from the side using a glass dropper could get messy but most nozzles will be fine, the tank holds 2ml of liquid.

Adjustable Airflow

On the top of the battery section we have a Visible Silver ring which is actually the top of a bigger part but the lower section is stepped in and inside the battery section. On this lower part is a Silver plate with a couple of small holes and a slot. On the outside of the top of the battery is the airflow slot as described before so the airflow control ring is actually on the inside while the outer slot is fixed. When the tank is together turning the glass also turns the Silver ring at the top of the battery so you can line the inner airflow plate up with the outer slot. You can have one small hole, 2 holes or 2 holes and just the very beginning of the slot which gives the equivalent of 3 holes for various MTL draws, keep turning and the slot comes fully into play for a restricted direct lung vape.

Using The Tyro

The Tyro is the usual 5 clicks of the fire button to turn on and off and the surround of the fire button gives a little light display to confirm. The Tyro is a simple direct output device so it's just a matter of pressing the fire button and vaping. The device does have battery status indication but all i can tell you is the percentages are nicely spread out so does give good information (i received no manual with sample and website doesn't give percentages). When the battery is quite full the surround lights White, when it's midway it lights Blue and when the battery is low it lights Red. As with all these types of devices multiple safety protections are built-in which are indicated by various flashes of the fire button surround.

My Experience Using The Tyro

I found the Tyro ideal for taking out with me when popping out doing things like shopping. I have had the Tyro for 3 weeks and tried both coils but i had used them previously with the Cosmo Tank and to be honest Nautilus coils being compatible is only a big pro because of availability as i was impressed with the Vaptio coils which matched the flavour from the Nautilus coils. I preferred the 0.7 direct lung coil as although i do MTL sometimes my favourite way of vaping is restrictive low wattage direct lung and the Tyro fitted that profile perfectly. I filled at home with gorilla bottles and a couple of times when out using a needle nose and found the filling method so quick and mess free but as mentioned it could be messy with chubbier nozzles and glass droppers. One of the drawbacks with AIO kits of this nature rather than having a vape pen kit with separate battery and tank is having to have fixed airflow but Vaptio have done a really good job tackling the problem. The airflow adjustment moves smoothly and when using the MTL coil i found one hole was a tight draw, 2 holes was that sought of middle of the road draw that you get with pod systems like the EQ and Zero and by just having the very edge of the slot open with the 2 holes gave me my loose MTL preference. When using it with the slot for DL it is a restricted hit only and i found i used it with airflow wide open, it wasn't turbulent and both MTL and DL gave a really nice vape. It is a direct output device but the drop-off is nothing drastic, in fact i didn't even notice it with the 1.6ohm coil. Because i used the device 2hrs here and 3 hours there over a period of time rather than in one solid stint with battery life i have to add up the hours and how often i charged it so a bit tricky but using the Tyro with the MTL coil should last all day but you would need an evening charge with the DL coil, still not bad battery life for such a little pen device.

Final Thoughts

A good out and about MTL and low wattage DL device which will appeal to many but is certainly a very good choice for a new vaper allowing them to MTL and experiment with DL. With Nautilus coils being compatible you should never have a problem getting hold of coils, always a bonus!

Likes

Good build quality
Pocket friendly
Good colour choices
Battery status indication
Multiple protections
MTL and DL
Adjustable airflow
Side quick fill method
Spare glass
Nautilus coils are compatible
Both MTL and DL coil included
Good flavour
Battery life good for a small AIO device

Cons

AIO device so can't use tank and battery independently
Takes 2.5 hour to charge
Although i put battery life as pro when using with DL coil life could be just a bit better to see you through the day (struggling for cons)

I would once again like to thank Bear from Vaptio for supplying the Tyro Starter Kit for the purpose of this review.
