Repost a review for XTAR X2 extended charger

【Packing and appearance】
The X2 extended version still uses XTRA’s usual white carton packaging and is printed in English. The “Certificate Photo” with X2 on the front allows you to know the product situation before opening the box.

The X2 extended version and the classic model have not changed much in appearance. They are still made of black flame retardant engineering plastic.

The upper part of the front is a dial-type LCD screen, which can more clearly display various charging information, such as battery percentage, charging current, voltage, charging capacity, etc. Compared with ordinary lithium battery chargers, you can see the actual status of the battery more intuitively.
The lower part is the battery charging compartment. As the name of X2, it can accommodate two lithium batteries (or Ni-MH-Ni-Cd batteries) for charging at the same time.

Due to the use of the negative electrode when the spring is stretched, X2 can be compatible with cylindrical lithium batteries of various specifications, such as smaller 10440 batteries, common 18650 batteries, and large-capacity 21700 batteries, as long as the length is between 44mm-70mm.

The X2 extended version has 6 non-slip rubber pads on the back and is printed with detailed input and output specifications. In addition, like the classic X2, in order to ensure heat dissipation, there are multiple grooved cooling holes on the back of the charger.

Looking at the interface part again, the X2 extended version has an AC input interface and a Micro USB DC input. If you have an external AC power supply, you can use the supplied AC charging cable to power the charger. If you are outdoors, you can use a power bank with a Micro USB cable to emergency charge the lithium battery. This design of AC and DC dual charging is still very necessary for outdoor enthusiasts.

Also, have to talk about this AC charging cable in the accessories. Use vW-1 / FT2 flame retardant wire with a cable tie. 2×0.824mm2 core, the maximum current carrying capacity is 9A, the maximum current carrying temperature is 105 ℃, which is more than enough for a battery charger. It can also be seen from this that the XTRA X2 is still quite adequate.

【Functional measurement】

The first thing to note is that the charging specifications of the two charging positions of the XTRA X2 extended version are not completely the same. The left position supports up to 2A fast charging, and the right position supports up to 1A charging, which is marked in the charging compartment. If two batteries are charged at the same time, 1A current is charged on both sides.

1. When AC power is supplied

The actual measurement is to charge a single 2600mAh 18650 lithium battery. The left side can start 2A fast charging, and the right side is 1A ordinary charging.
The left charging position can charge about 33mAh per minute, and more than 1900mAh can be charged in 1 hour. The 2600mAh 18650 cylindrical lithium battery is fully charged in about 90 minutes. This speed is quite good in a lithium battery charger.
In the case of charging two 4200mAh 21700 lithium batteries at the same time, both charging positions are 1A, and about 17mAh can be charged for each battery.

Because the 21700 battery has a large capacity, it takes more than 4 hours to fully charge both batteries.

According to the above-mentioned actual measurement situation, it is recommended that if you need emergency power supply when you go out, you can choose the left fast charge position to charge a single lithium battery. When a large amount of power is needed, you can choose to rest at night and charge two lithium batteries at the same time.

2.When DC power is supplied

When we are outdoors, there are definitely situations where we cannot find or use AC power. At this time, the X2 extended version of the DC charging interface can play a role. Through a Micro USB charging cable, you can temporarily use the power bank to charge the urgently needed lithium battery. The X2 extended version of the DC interface supports up to 5V2.1A input. Of course, your charger needs to support 5V2A or more output.

When the actual test uses a power bank, the X2 extended version can charge a single lithium battery with 2A current, or two lithium batteries with 1A current at the same time.

In other words, if there is no AC power source around in outdoor sports or photography, you can use the ordinary power bank to charge the lithium battery.

【Security test】

In addition to having a faster-charging speed and more comprehensive charging capabilities, the X2 Extended Edition also performs well in terms of safety. Built-in multiple protection measures such as overcharge, overcurrent, overvoltage, over-discharge, anti-reverse connection, and anti-short circuit.

When the battery is placed in the charging compartment in the reverse direction, X2 will start the intelligent anti-reverse connection function, and the LCD display will show an ERR error.

When a metal wrench is used to simulate the short circuit of the positive and negative electrodes, although the screen shows it is identified as a nickel-metal hydride battery, the actual current is only about 0.07A, and there is no large current when a short circuit occurs. It can be seen that the short-circuit prevention function of X2 is enough to cope with the accidental contact of metals such as screws and iron wires

In terms of temperature control, the XTRA X2 measured the maximum front temperature at the screen position during fast charging, about 29.4 ° C; the maximum back temperature appeared above the heat dissipation hole, and the maximum temperature was about 35.9 ° C; the touch was only slightly warm.

【Conclusion】

In general, for a donkey or a photography enthusiast who has much cylindrical lithium battery-powered equipment, XTRA’s new X2 extended version charger still maintains the advantages of the classic model, which can fully meet the outdoor lithium battery charging Demand, and has wider applicability than classic models. The only disadvantage may be a slight increase in weight and volume. Of course, considering the safety of charging equipment, it is also within the acceptable range.

I really like this new version X2 charger and it has just become my go-to charger now. Especially when it can take longer 21700 cells. And hopefully, XTAR could have more chargers that come with a setting for individual current control

That’s all for my review today if you have any questions or any other recommendation of this charger please comment down below.
