Bottom Line: This is South Africa. We have a greater example to set than the rest of the world. We are at a time where we need to exercise double self control and respect for society at large.

This is a public space and since the topic was raised I have decided to always watch my tongue.

I grew up on 90's rock and metal and grunge. I have horribly bbad language use. I can curse like a pro.

On a forum your generally know very little about the other members so as a sign of respect one does not swear. However when you're with your buddies you know them well enough to converse freely. What if the owner of your favorite forum is a holy man.

Strange how a thread that I thought would largely go unnoticed got quite a hefty amount of replies. Luckily the common consensus is to moderate yourself before posting.

I would prefer that the Holy man (not used sarcastically) enter into a private conversation with me before banning me. I am sure things can be sorted out with a formal apology. Everyone makes mistakes. I, for one, would like to be criticized on them and given the chance to improve before being ripped from a great forum like this.

I think a ban on first offense is a bit harsh. A warning first and maybe a 1 week chill out period if it happens again. If the Mods/Owners so choose to handle f's and b's.

I feel that the hardcore FPK words dont have a place on a forum, but shit is fine on its own or when prefaced with bull.
I do use the FPK's when I feel that emphasis is needed, depending on company, in the 3D world when streaming live, but here there is enough font formatting to get the message across.

I am fluent in Sailor, but I try to avoid using that with people I do not know. On public forums it should typically be frowned upon and avoided as well. You have no idea what half the members do for a living, what their beliefs are or what might offend them. It might be OK with them, but not for a kid or someone taking a peek over their shoulder.
It should be fairly simple to avoid using expletives online. Some of the mellower words flow freely, but you don't have to sound like Eddie Murphy to get a point across.

I try not to swear on forums, as it can just end up in a huge mess, with offending people and then the moderators/admin get involved. It's just a whole bunch of unnecessary fighting that can be avoided using an adjective. That's my two cents

I was wondering the same thing, the other day i wrote that the triton RTA was a "female dog" to build on and it was censored but i have previously used much stronger language and not censored. Maybe it's just me but i don't think calling an inanimate object a "bee with an itch" is offensive..

I know something about swearing. Served in the Navy/Vietnam from the mid 60's when every other word from some people of either gender were expletives. I thought of it as a lack of vocabulary skills, trying to be the man/woman they needed while still a boy/girl, ego, in anger, etc. Even so a lot of swear words are acceptable to many folks now days as long as used in a context that does not point to an individuals origin, ethnic, gender, persuasion, etc or in anger. Lets face it, some words no matter how innocent you intend them to be will offend someone on something like a forum that is a melting pot of worldwide cultures. Why most forums auto censor most so called swear words, or at least a list of them Admin feels are not acceptable. In the end it is their call, this is after all their house.

Personally I've had stern stares a few times for using terms that are used by those that use them to refer to themselves. They were not meant to be derogatory, they were not accepted that way by those they referred to present, but they were by others within ear shot who didn't have a clue. So it is a huge grey area on an open public forum IMO.

Swearing in public is a sign of immaturity so why not give the rope and let them hang themselves for everyone to see... Just my viewpoint.

I use the old "F" word now and again in conversation when necessary. However I avoid swearing on any social media as far as possible. At school, I was taught that swearing shows you have a poor vocabulary. If you Google words to the effect: "what are the indications of being intelligent?" you will find that one of them is "not swearing". Now, I am not saying that if you swear you are not intelligent, but I do generally agree with this assertion. Generally speaking, "loose" or continuous swearing says a lot about a person. Also, ask yourself, if you were going for an interview for a new job, would you like your potential future boss to read all your f words on this or any other forum?
A lot of impressions of others are based not on how they speak, but also how they write. If I read a post (by an English speaking person) with careless abbreviations and poor spelling, immediately I hold that person in a lower esteem than a writer who writes proper English.
So, yes, I agree. Drop the swearing and rather use your Thesaurus. You will be better off for it!

Now now, I am totally okay with people who swear or don't swear... But, linking it to the persons intelligence? Now, i know you say that you are not saying that it is correlated, but you did agree with the assertion. I go back to, do what makes you, you... If someone thinks that you are silly, uneducated or a lessor person because you swear - that's for them to think.

I quite like the concept of language... someone called a Tree, a tree and we all call it as such (same applies to other languages). If tree, meant "f*ck", we wouldn't use the word tree, because of what we have allowed the word to mean... So at the end of the day, we are arguing the pros and cons of letters, arranged in a particular way and pronounced in the specific means to offend someone - and then still trying to argue intelligence.

Don't think a day has ever passed where I haven't sworn . At work its because of having to deal with Transnet. The other times are when chatting with mates. I have no issues with it as long as it's not directed at a person/me in an attempt to insult or threaten.

I make it a rule never to swear in front of ladies, kids, elders & strangers(unless they're pirates too:D)

Also never swore on this forum out of respect for it's members . Would be nice to have a thread though where anything goes but you enter at your own risk:D

Personally, I think swearing can be an effective when used by a skilled practitioner. For example, I don't think many would claim that comedians Billy Connolly and Robin Williams are/were either unintelligent or starved for vocabulary. They tend to use it like spice - not too much, and used to punctuate or emphasize (not dominate) - perhaps that's a key.

My douche (<--- boarderline, maybe?) next door neighbour who effs and blights about the slightest thing... not so much.
