So in my 'My Broadband' daily newsletter, I came across this headline, "Airline warning to anyone who vapes in South Africa". So being naturally curious why is vaping being targeted again, I scroll through the article, and it's slightly laughable. Firstly, vapes are a side mention in it and being listed with other things like "laptops, cell phones, power banks, Bluetooth earbuds and vapes".
So, I dove in and used the formula they posted to determine my Wh using the formula they posted, nl. Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × voltage.
My device uses two 21700 cells (Golisi S35's to be specific), and let's say they were fresh (and not a year old like they are currently), even then, the Golisi S35 is rated at 3,750 mAh and has a nominal voltage of 3.7 V.
Using their formula:
Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × Voltage
So:
Wh = (3750 ÷ 1000) × 3.7
Wh = 3.75 × 3.7
= 13.875 Wh per battery
So I'd call it 13.88 Wh per S35.
So for two batteries: 13.875 × 2 = 27.75 Wh
And two 21700's is one of the biggest vapes someone can carry on board, unless you're running something like a HOG with 4 x 18650's, but even then the Golisi G30 18650 is rated at 3,000 mAh and 3.7 V nominal.
Using the same formula:
Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × Voltage
Wh = (3000 ÷ 1000) × 3.7
Wh = 3 × 3.7
1 × Golisi G30 = 11.1 Wh
41 × Golisi G30 = 44.4 Wh
which is still well under the 100Wh limit.
Put it in perspective, a 20,000 mAh power bank ~74 Wh.
But the headline screams 'VAPES' because that's the new danger word... Pisses me off.

South Africans travelling with large vapes need to be aware of the airline policies that regulate them.
