Coils matched to juice profiles

Okay, so I know this is probably a loaded and very subjective topic, but maybe the coil gurus can give some valuable input here?

Is it possible to create a basic, or broad guideline for when to select a clapton vs a staple vs an alien based on the type of juice or setup?

Interesting thread @CJB85 ! I would also like to know if there are preferred coils for certain juices/setups. My personal experience has always been: Simple Round Wire or MTL Clapton coils for MTL and Aliens for the rest (Mainly Desserts/ Tobaccos/Desserty-Tobaccos)

I have never done a round wire build in an MTL setup, I usually do either the Coilology MTL Staple, or MTL Aliens that I got from @smilelykumeenit .
I have some Coilology MTL Clapton wire on the way and just received some Coilology MTL Aliens as well, so hopefully get a more complete picture soon.
For DL, I usually run coilology Framed Staples of around .3 Ohms. I often find that Aliens can run too hot, or intense for my liking (all my current setups are rather restricted DL in an Intake Single and Mav-T RDTA).
With the MTL, I find that coil placement and proper wicking has made way more of a difference than the coils (so far).

All of the above has been purely guess-work, or simply using what has been at hand (or affordable), so it would be great to get a baseline of what to consider for which devices/profiles.

Sho, I have only just started building coils and man, what a difference in the same tanks. My Nano Wasp I started with plain round Kanthal, next time around a Clapton and next time around comp wire parallel.
Each time threw out a totally different experience. Same again when I use different AWG.
Nice thread though. I do like to say what I am using when I post in threads like what is in your hand now.

You can do it yourself by editing the first post in this thread

To find the URL of the post you want to link to, you click on the little post number towards the bottom right of a post. It will bring up a box with the exact URL address. Copy that.

Then in your index you either paste that link directly or, you can select some text to make it clickable. Once text is selected, click on the “make link” icon in the editor bar above. It’s the 7th icon from the left. You can then paste in the URL and then that text becomes clickable.

Yes, quite right
The index creator determines how to set up and maintain the index. That works best. For example, Andre has been the one doing the indexes in each of the DIY flavour profile threads.
And only you can edit your first post in this thread, so you are then the indexer. Makes sense for the index to be at the top of the thread.

Forgot to mention @CJB85 , you will have to do this with a normal browser, this functionality of finding the exact URL and creating links is not possible on Tapatalk. If it is I haven’t found it. Much better to do it with a normal browser. There is way more functionality

For the first 4 years of my journey I swore there was no difference between my round wire builds and the fancy coils and could never understand why anyone would use a fancy coil... that was until I tried a Coil Company Alien... there is a massive difference between El Cheapo Fancy Coils and ones made by the Coil Masters who use high-end Ni80. It has gotten to the stage where I buy in bulk and pretty much only use Ni80 2,5mm Aliens in all my setups.

Using 2 different sets of the "fancy coils" in both my rta's after having used the coil company coils before. Just needed to see if there was a difference.

Going forward , only using the coil company coils. There is a noticeable difference in flavour from the get go. Thought i was imagining things. And paid R120 - R150 for the other coils.


Wicking is another story. . .

My recommendation:

Coils:
The Coils Company nano aliens ( Works well for me , vaping at 55W - 70W )

Wicking:
Cotton Bacon Prime
FireBolt Cotton - Ease of use and flavour is good

I have Titanium Fibre cotton as well, but after 3 - 4 days the vape feels dry and flavour not as good as the 1st 2 days of use.

So this raises even more questions... When to consider a 2.5mm ID vs a 3mm ID?

Or even a 4mm. I get better results from a 4 mm single parallel in my Blotto than I do with 2 coils in there. Just like the juice comparisons though if you have a table showing what other guys are doing you have a base line to start with. I would love to see and be happy to contribute to such a table.

I think its a matter of airflow. If you have alot of air you will need more heat to taste the flavor.
I find without warmth I cannot taste my juice properly.
More restricted airflow needs less heat so more regular coils like fused claptons.
higher gauge wire such as 29g 30g heat fast and run warmer in my experience.
Coil diameter also plays a role 2.5mm brings more heat and sometimes is better with larger airflow.

Or you can ignore what I said & just use aliens, they are the best!

Great thread, i believe with coils surface area is key but the atty it'self need to have the airflow to give full coverage to that surface area(not to be confused with wide open loads of air but more directed) which is why just simple round wire in authentic MTL atty's works well as more surface area wouldn't get serviced by air coverage. I would say you are on to something but personally believe it's the type of coil in conjunction to what atty it is in that then would suit different juice profiles but others will have different theories!

Agree, again down to surface area in conjunction with air coverage. So a nice sized coil getting complete air coverage = great flavour. Some might think well surely more total surface area with the dual set-up but it's quite cramped in the Blotto making most of that surface area redundant because it's getting no air coverage!

You could use the best materials plucked from the nether regions of an angel and if your placement and wicking are "incorrect" you will not get the best flavour.

Conversely the best placement together with an ,to some people ,"inferior"coil will produce good results.

I have tried tons of different coils. Top quality coils seem to last a bit longer. As far as flavour is concerned for me the jury is still out.

I would love to see a blind taste test using similar coils from different makers.

Yeah my experience seems to be the same as @Rob Fisher in regard Ni80 finding more expensive coils giving better results but it's marginal but with Kanthal and SS coils i can't tell any difference, where i do find a difference is how long the coils last rather than initial flavour. Mass produced coils seem to only be good for 3 or 4 re-wicks while coils i have bought at a lot higher premium last months! Of course coil placement, and other flavour encouragement of the design of the atty like a reduced chamber, domed ceiling etc all play a part!
