Hi All,

I am based in Australia however coming to SA in a few weeks and wanted to get a package sent to a friend of mine. Package coming from New Zealand of some Nicotine Salts that are only available there. Not a big parcel, just 360 ml in total. Package would be sent by DHL

I have been looking up the customs rules but am a bit confused. Is it just a matter of paying the excises or does the person that it is going to have to register as an importer, apply for an import permit etc ?

Thanks

I’d keep the parcel labelled as general vape liquid, not nicotine, and expect customs to possibly add duty or flag it. DHL often asks for extra paperwork before releasing it.

Found this while browsing and wanted to add that DHL has been stricter lately with anything labeled as nicotine. Some people have had better luck if the sender lists it as flavored concentrate, but rules can change fast and customs may still hold it. Has anyone here imported salts recently and can share how long their parcels took or if extra paperwork was needed?

Even small volumes can get stopped. Best bet is checking SA customs directly so your mate doesn’t get burned. I learned the hard way to double-check health-related imports after dealing with chronic fatigue issues myself. Ended up researching legit medical routes instead—if you’re curious, you can find more info on how tightly controlled treatments like ME options are handled properly.

Based on South African customs and health regulations, importing nicotine products for personal use typically requires payment of applicable duties and excise taxes. However, since nicotine is a regulated substance, the recipient may need to ensure compliance with quantity limits for personal use and may be asked to provide additional documentation upon clearance. It's strongly recommended to contact the South African Revenue Service (SARS) or a customs broker directly for the most current guidance, as regulations can change and DHL may also assist with clearance requirements. Safe travels.
