Am not sure of the answer regarding pros and cons of different shaped coils.
I think the reason why most of us build round coils is because its easier to do.
I haven't ever vaped on a hex shaped coil - but I do know you get other shapes to wires. You get round, ribbon and I have seen square shaped wire before - I just can't remember what it was called.

I doubt there will be any real difference. I would imagine it would have more hotspots when initially setting it up due to the bent edges. other than that it may also look better in pictures. but vape wise should be the same

I have built quite a few odd shaped coils and one of them was the boneyard coil which is wrapped around a round drill bit but turns out square due to the way its made by flattening the wire. Didn't have very high hopes for it after it was installed but it vaped very good in the end, could I taste the difference or was there any change in performance?... unfortunately all the effort didn't make up for any improvements. Still fun to make and looks very nice though

But would it not in theory increase surface area of the juice therefore increasing flavor?

If i use 10cm of wire and coil a round shape or a hex shape will they not give more or less the same ohm reading?

It's basically just a spaced flattened twisted wire. Surface area does increase but not by so much that it makes a noticeable difference

Theoretically yes but sharp bends do stretch or compact the wire (depending on cristaline structure) and could thus create areas of differing resistance in the material. This would be minute unless some serious trists and turns are made. I think the main concern would be airflow around the coil and how it affects airflow in the chamber as a whole. Round is an earodynamic shape where as flat surfaces could obstruct airflow over the whole of the coil. This would be a science all of its own.
As the best things in life are round, i will maar stick to round coils as well.

My main concern would be wicking it, gaps between the bends could lead to boiling juice in the same way a loosely packed wick does, so some sizzle, spit back and funky tastes, and some spots as mentioned before me could be too tight, but I think if the corners were fairly obtuse angles it could be done without much hassle. Why don't you give it a go and give us feedback?
