Hey All! Been wanting to get into the realm of RDA, as ive always used RTA(Dead rabbit - dont @ me lol) so ive read that the newer ones are quite kak, so looking at an old school one. Was looking at the Asgard? Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi

New RDA's are fine, they willl get the job done. Obviously there are better ones than just fine. RDAs have been around for ages, so to make a bad one these days is not common.

I think when it comes to RDAs, I think the biggest factor is the use case for the RDA, that will determine what kind of RDA you want. Only you will be able to answer that question.

So for starters:
- Single or dual coil
- Flavour or cloud chasing
- Airflow Top/side/bottom/combanation of some or all three
- Squonk or dripping or RDTA tank style
- Mesh or coil(regular wire)
- Single batt or dual batt
- Mech or regulated mod
- Diameter size 22mm/24mm/25mm/26mm/The infitite list of sizes goes on forever
- MTL or RDL or DL

Depending on your answer for above will determine on what RDA you should be getting, whether it be old or new. RDAs tend to be very good at a single thing or a few things, but not all. Much like RTAs, the use case comes first and then the solution (Which RTA/RDA will suit your use case best).

E.g you not gonna buy a RTA that is for cloud chasing, dual coiler with massive capacity and size for giant coils and wide open airflow if you looking for a tiny compact good flavour MTL that is discrete and small to fit in an office suit jacket.

I appreciate the lengthly response, this actually helps alot. So to summarize, I'm looking for a RDA that's for flavor, going to run it on a dual 18650 regulated mod, dripping style RDA, Direct to Lung. Hope this helps!

OK so there is some things to consider here.

Since you looking for flavour:

- I would recommend a single coil RDA that is small in size to have reduced chamber to help maximize flavour.
- Direct to lung is gonna be a bit harder, not impossible, however small flavour RDAs tend to have less airy airflows to help with the flavour (essentially the more air you mix with the vapour the less concentration you get). Maybe a RDL?
- Since I am recommebding a single coil. Dripping won't be an issue, since you want to drip directly on a coil.
- Dual 18650 would get you decent battery life, normally for single coil RDAs you normally run a higher resitance coil, but in some cases you can run a fat massive coil @ 0.2ohm with high wattage. The issue with big low ohm coils is the heat and the spit back. Which is why it's usaully not recommended on smaller RDAs.

There are plenty of good single coil DL-RDL RDAs out there for flavour, problem is getting hold of one nowadays, since most of the market is disposibles now.

To list a few:

- Wasp nano RDA
- Requiem RDA
- Drop Solo RDA V1/V1.5
- Reload S RDA/Reload S Pro RDA
- Blaze Solo RDA
- Profile RDA (uses mesh and thats if you into mesh)
- Recurve RDA V1/V2
- Dead rabbit mini RDA
- Dead Rabbit Solo RDA

You gonna need to do some google-fu to see if some place has any of these for new available in South Africa. Your only other option is to find a second hand one. You can try keep an eye out on the classifieds section on this forum.

The list provided isn't exhaustive and many people have different preferences. Some might hate leaking so would look for ones that tend to be harder to leak, however since you gonna be dripping that would be more a of a self-control inssue when adding juice. Depending on juices some might say one in particular is better than another, but a different person might think the opposite. Some people might be bothered by whistling when drawing in, while others not, so would look for honeycomb airflow. Takeaway here is a review might sound great, but then you try it with your preferences and land up hating it.

In general get the build right, such as coil mass/resitance, height of coil, adjust airflow accordingly, use the right wattage and then you should be good to go and be satisfied with any of the RDAs. Remember you gonna need to play around a bit before you maximise it's ability, so don't give up right away. Only try a different one when you have failed many times over with all different variations.

Dual coils can also work for flavour. And since you using dual batt mod, then that can also work. Since they usually require much higher wattage and single batt mods wouldn't last you long enough. So don't 100% think that only a single coil is the way you should personally go.

Obey robot has a new Asgard Mini RDA on sale right now.

Good luck and I hope you come right. I started on RTAs and moved to RDAs and never looked back since. Tried dual and single coil RDAs.

Ah, stepping into the world of RDAs, are we? Good man — that’s where the real flavour lives. Once you start dripping, you’ll wonder how you ever tolerated that RTA airflow gymnastics.

The Asgard is still a solid choice — smooth draw, loads of space to build, and plenty of tuning options if you like to tinker.
A few honourable mentions while we’re at it:

  • The Recoil R3 by Grimm Green — one of my personal favourites. Flavour monster, beautifully machined, and feels like it was built by people who actually vape.
  • The Hellvape Hellbeast (if you can find one) — criminally underrated flavour banger.
  • And don’t judge the Dead Rabbit line too harshly. The DR3 is a solid little RDA for what it costs — easy build deck, smooth airflow, and great for cutting your teeth before moving into the high-end gear.
On that note, I’m running a few small R10 raffles on WhatsApp to give folks a shot at snagging some quality gear for cheap. The first one up is the ThunderCloud Blaze Dual Coil RDA by Mike Vapes — brand new, sealed, and purple enough to make Prince proud.

You’ve got to join the Old Goat Raffles WhatsApp group to enter, but it’s a good bit of fun and you might just walk away with your new favourite dripper.
Drop me a PM if you want the link.
